KENDRIYA VIDYALAYA SANGATHAN - a premier organization in India administering 980 schools known as "Kendriya Vidyalayas" with 9,96,166 students and 41,803 employees on rolls as on 01.10.2007. Since inception in 1965, the Kendriya Vidyalayas (Central Schools) have come to be known as centres of excellence in the field of secondary and senior secondary education promoting national integration and a sense of " Indianness" among the children while ensuring their total personality development and academic excellence. India is a pluralistic society with diverse culture and multiplicity of languages. There are 28 States and 7 Union Territories and education being State subject, each one of them follows its own pattern and medium of instruction. It really becomes difficult for the children migrating from one state to the other to continue their studies. In most of the cases they have to start afresh. It is in this context that the idea of encouraging the growth of secondary schools with a common syllabus and medium of instruction for the benefit of the children of Central Government employees liable to frequent transfers was mooted by the Second Central Pay Commission, which, inter -alia recommended provision of this facility by the Government for its employees so that the education of their children may not be disrupted due to their frequent and sudden transfers. Accordingly, in November, 1962, the Government of India approved the scheme of Kendriya Vidyalayas to cater to the educational needs to the children of the Central Government employees including Defence personnel, who in exigency of their services are frequently transferred from one language area to the other. As a first step towards implementation of the scheme, 20 Regimental Schools were taken over as "Central Schools" or "Kendriya Vidyalayas" during the year 1963-64. Two years later on 15th December, 1965, an autonomous body named "Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan" was setup under the Societies Registration Act of 1960 to open and manage Kendriya Vidyalayas. The number of Kendriya Vidyalayas has since gone upto 923 out of which 2 are functioning abroad at Kathmandu ( Nepal) and Moscow (Russia) . Though the focus still continues to be on the admission of the children of Central Government employees, admission are open to other children as well, depending upon the availability of seats.
